Robert Sprung

CEO

A veteran of the translation industry with over 20 years’ experience, Robert has overseen large-scale quality-intensive translation solutions for clients including TIME magazine, Johnson & Johnson, and American Express. For TIME, he oversaw all aspects of translation of the magazine’s first foreign-language edition, in which a global team of journalists, linguists, and production professionals collaborated weekly to produce a multilingual version within 72 hours. For Johnson & Johnson, for whom he has been a preferred supplier for 20 years, he crafted the organization’s first foreign-language procedures, and continues to supply services ranging from multilingual packaging and marketing collateral through to technical documentation, labeling, and Web content. A graduate of Harvard University, summa cum laude in modern and classical languages, he received an MA in modern languages with honors from Cambridge University (UK) on a George C. Marshall Scholarship, sponsored by the British Government.

He is a widely published author in the field of professional translation, having edited and co-authored the book Translating Into Success: Cutting-Edge Strategies for Going Multilingual in a Global Age, a collection of Harvard Business School-style case studies in multilingual and cross-cultural communications; the book was published by the American Translators’ Association as part of their scholarly monograph series and is used as a textbook in the US and abroad.

For four years he was executive editor of Language International, a magazine covering cross-cultural and multilingual communications, published in Amsterdam for an international subscriber base.

His expertise spans the areas of transcreation and translation process, workflow, technology, and quality metrics. He was formerly founder and CEO of Harvard Translations, a pioneer in language translation, process, and technology; the company was later sold to Lionbridge in a public transaction.
